ATB: Book Choices

Question:  I am an advanced reader, but I want to honor the Lord in all that I read and I find that some of the more advanced books have things in them that are not yet appropriate for me.  We know you are an advanced reader.  How do you choose books carefully?  Do you have recommendations?

ATB Answer:

That is a great question because we have had the exact same problem with reading more advanced books. Hopefully what we have learned will help others.
Tip 1. Read the back cover of the book of the book. You can usually tell a lot about what the book is going to be like from the back cover.
Tip 2. Have your mom flip through the book and check it out.
Tip 3. Read reviews for the book online or even the author. Two great places to look are Plugged In and Common Sense Media. They don’t always have certain books so sometimes we just look up Christian book review for the book online.
Tip 4. If you are reading and you come across something that you don’t think is right or the Spirit convicts you about, close the book and return it. Don’t keep reading. There are so many books we have never finished because of the content.
Tip 5. To the parent, be willing to have a conversation with your kid about the/a book that they’ve recently read. Sometimes as kids, to really process things, we need to talk them out.
Tip 6. If there’s a book that you want to read that you’re worried might have something off in it, read it along with your mom or dad.
Here are some books I have read and recommend:
*The Making of America Series by Teri Kanefield
*The Mandy Series by Louis Gladys Leppard
*The Thing About Leftovers by C.C. Payne(if the readers family doesn’t want their child reading about a character with divorced and remarried parents, this probably isn’t the book for them. Mind you, it doesn’t glorify it, it’s actually about the girl’s struggle with her parents divorce, but still)
*The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart
*Glory Be by Augusta Scattergood
*the Nancy Drew series by Carolyn Keene
*the Phantom Tollbooth
*Color Me Dark by Patricia McKissack
*Loot by Jude Watson
*On Stage Please by Veronica Tennant
*Wonder by R.J. Pelocio
*Girls Who Rocked the World by McCann and Welden
*Finding God’s Life for my Will by Mike Donehey
Hopefully these help!  If you have other excellent recommendations, leave a comment!

Thoughts on I Corinthians 13

I could give the poor a million dollars,

But without love, it would be nothing.

I could be a martyr for Christ,

But without love, it would be nothing.

I could have nothing,

And have love,

And I would be something.

So let the voice of love be heard.

Don’t store it away or hide it.

Let it guide you on your journey home.

Let it make a difference in this world.

Be something.

Let your love be something.

I give you these–

Faith, hope, and love.

The greatest of these is love.

Dear Diary

Dear Diary,

(Well, I guess dear dirt that I’m scratching.)

Anyway, dear diary, today I caught a worm!  Henpen and Rusty did, but mine was the juiciest.  I also got a bath today.  (Chicken definition of bath:  warm water, soap scrub, pick up, salty vinegar, scrub, pick up, warm water, pick up, dry off with a towel, blow dry.)

Plus a skunk tried to get in.  It’s been a full day!  TTYL (Talk to you later).

Dear Diary,

(Well, I guess dear sawdust that I’m scratching.)

I guess my day to say goodbye has come.  Goodbye Rusty, Henrietta, and everyone else that loved me.  Especially, Gymnast.  Something is happening to me.  It doesn’t hurt; I just know that soon I won’t be here with my friends and my girl.  As my last entry before I pass, I want to say have fun, Hen and Rust and Gymnast and her family.  Do what I did!  Live life to the absolutely fullest!  Do not take life for granted.  Never, ever.

Goodbye,

Oreo

Spring Ping

I’m ready to Par-ty

Cause I’m green spring!

Bring on the happy children

And crisp blue spring skies

And my bright PING grass.

No one can stop me

Cause I’m spring

And I’m here to stay.

I’m full of emerald grass

And cartwheeling, handstanding,

Get-out-of-jail sky.

So don’t even try to stop me!

Fitness Commercial: Yogurt Choices

ryleigh-health1

To show all that I’ve learned in our health unit, I created a commercial to share with my class.  I researched different brands of yogurt, comparing the protein and sugar in each.  Did you know that some yogurt has more grams of sugar than a twinkie?  I shared a play and some  of my research, and then we sampled some yogurt with our family’s special healthy granola sprinkled on top.

Persuasive Family Adventure: A Hike to Johnson Rock

ryleigh-adventure

Have you ever seen a rock that has history behind it? Even if you’ve seen one, you should hike to Johnson Rock.

You should hike to Johnson Rock because it is great exercise. It is great exercise because I was painting when I got there, there are lots of steep hills, and I drank tons of water when I came home.

You should also hike to Johnson Rock because there is a very interesting plaque to read. The plaque was replaced two times, and the plaque has great information. Plus the story is real, not made up.

You should really hike to Johnson Rock because it is super fun to climb and jump off the rock. I did it four or five times. The rock was taller than me, and that made it fun to climb. And there is a mini forest to explore on top of the rock.

I hiked to Johnson Rock with my family, and I had fun. I hope you do too!
